We watched Al Gore’s movie “An Inconvenient Truth” over the holiday. It is a documentary, and it follows Mr. Gore as he travels worldwide presenting an in-depth, fact-filled, presentation about global warming and current and future consequences. Governments, learning institutions, special interest groups, and citizens in many countries are eager to learn about this very real problem, and Mr. Gore has honed his presentation into an interesting and easy to understand experience for his audiences. By virtue of the movie, many more of us gain access to this information in the comfort of our own living rooms.

We knew from the reading we have done that global warming is a reality (not a myth, as our own Senator Jim Inhofe has stated). However, we were stunned when we saw the graphics and photos of the huge change in glacier sizes over a period of years, and the statistics Mr. Gore had to support his conclusions. I highly recommend that EVERYONE see this documentary, do some outside reading and research, and form your own conclusions. We concluded that we must do everything we can to be a ‘part of the cure’, as we used to say, instead of continuing to be ‘a part of the problem’.

The United States is one of the largest contributors to the overall problem. The pollutants from our automobiles and factories is unbelievable. We don’t have to be political lobbyists or activists to promote conservation and help stop the ruination of our planet. I feel that we can no longer wait until ‘the other guys do it’. As Mr. Gore states, as a country, we need to take the initiative and show by example what must be done to stop, and hopefully reverse, the damage our industrialized societies have done to our environment.

The threat of even more severe climate change is no longer somewhere way out there in the future. According to statistics presented in the documentary, some very real problems may be evident within the next 20 years. (We are already seeing climate and weather changes!) Please take time to rent Mr. Gore’s documentary and spend a couple of hours learning about the health of our mutual home. It will be money and time well spent, I promise. Together, we can make a difference!!
