DinnerWoes

What the heck are we going to eat tonight?!?*!? The answer to that question hounds me like the Baskerville’s mutt, you know, the Baskerville Hound? Seriously. I am cooking-weary. I don’t have kids at home to feed, but I have me and Don, and we DO like to eat. But there are only so many ways to prepare chicken, beef, pork, fish, and all the other stuff. In the end I can’t fool us, we still know it’s chicken, beef, pork, fish, and all the other stuff, albeit with different sauces or spices. I have more cookbooks than I care to count, all filled with page after page of delicious recipes, many of which I have tried and we have loved. But it takes TIME to PLAN what we are going to eat, TIME to BUY the ingredients, TIME to COOK it, and TIME to CLEAN UP THE MESS. Notice I didn’t mention TIME to EAT it, because of all the TIME spent on meals, probably TEN MINUTES is all it takes to polish our plates. Even at Thanksgiving and Christmas, after DAYS of preparation and HOURS of cooking, the actual eating part is OVER in TEN MINUTES!!!! So I cook the same things over and over because I’ve made the recipe so often it has become EASY, but also BORING.

All that said, WHY do we both have weight issues?!? You would think, with all that boring food, we would be svelte. Not so. Fluffy. Well, not quite fluffy yet, but it’s on the horizon. So my self-talk says if we are going to be borderline fluffy, at least we should be eating delicious meals, right? Then my self-talk says if we had such delicious meals all the time, we would BE fluffy now, perhaps even be looking BACK on fluffy wistfully as we approached Super-Fluffy. I can hear some of you thinking ‘but you would eat less’. No. We would eat more because it would be so darned good. I know me, us.

The answer to part of the issue is PORTION CONTROL. I get it. I just don’t like it. It requires self-discipline, that pesky voice of sanity and reason I find tediously annoying when it comes to food. PORTION CONTROL can also be known as CALORIE COUNTING in my world. Well, shoot.

So today I am again wrestling with what to cook for the next, I don’t know, YEAR, and thinking I guess I’ll TRY to start doing something NEW. Since we are sworn to begin efforts in earnest to trim some of our BODY FAT something new will also have to be something healthful yet satisfying. Hmmm. Wonder what THAT’s going to be?
