Just a Tent

J and M were here this weekend to attend the OU-TCU football game. (Go OU!) Tailgating and meeting up with some old friends to catch up and kick back. They had a great time and got to blow off some steam. While they were blowing off steam, Don and I kept Chach and Stein entertained at Camp Gramma.

We have been able to spend a lot of time with Chach and Stein over the past five years, and I’m so thankful for that. When you know you want to have the kids around, you plan for it so they will want to be here. We’ve hauled in all kinds of backyard play equipment—climbing forts and slides—and we have box after box of toys geared to their age group. We’ve always had Pak ‘n Play beds when they were tiny—well, you get the idea.

One thing they’ve enjoyed as much, or more, than anything else we’ve gotten for them is their little pop-up tent. This little tent is for indoor use, and has been a godsend, especially when going outside to play isn’t an option. They’ve spent hours playing in that thing, and so far it’s held up to the rolling and jumping and tearing through the openings they’ve dished out.

Saturday night they decided for the first time that they wanted to sleep in the tent all night. We put a couple of quilts down for extra padding, threw in their pillows and a couple of afghans, and they were ready for the night. It was close quarters for sleeping, especially together, but those two slept through the entire night in that little tent. They did it without a peep of complaint, just a little jockeying for ‘more room’, and then just went straight down for the count. The next morning they got up happy as could be that they had actually slept in the tent all night. How I love those two little guys.

The little tent sits empty now–Chach and Stein have gone home. One day they will be too big for this little tent, but until then it will be folded up and awaiting their return. It’s funny how a little bit of cloth stretched over some plastic poles can become such a fond memory for all of us.
