Written and directed by brothers Ethan and Joel Coen, Burn After Reading delivers the much-desired unexpected movie experience. It is a dark comedy, and as such you see funny things happening at the most embarrassing and/or gruesome moments.
The characters painted by the Coens draw you into their world and turn a simple story into a complicated tapestry of self-interest, blackmail, and deceit. You see and hear the characters doing things you know will get them into trouble, and you are right. Each scene advances each character a bit deeper into the mire, and the trap is sprung almost before you are ready.
Because I don’t want to tell you the story and spoil the fun, I will tell you that Burn After Reading is somewhat similar to Fargo, another Coen brothers movie that was also a dark comedy replete with bumbling characters who are their own worst enemy. If you liked Fargo, as I did, then you will also enjoy this movie. I highly recommend it!
