Last night the dogs and I spent a quiet evening ‘home alone.’ That is, until about 9 PM, when all three of them just went crazy barking and running around the living room and dining room, hackles raised. They don’t raise their hackles unless they sense something VERY strange.

I turned the outside lights on the back yard, and everything looked normal. Once again they probably got spooked by one of our cats rustling the louvers in the window shades. Or so I thought. Today I discovered the large, full, trash container in front of the gate had been completely turned on its side, and in the back yard one of the children’s play tables was upside down and dragged partially into the yard from its normal spot next to the house. Hmmm.

‘Maybe’ our dogs did the play table, but kind of doubtful. And I know they didn’t do the trash container. So I am left to speculate on how those two things became upended, and I can’t help but make a ‘leap’ and conclude that it happened exactly when the dogs were barking their alarm last night.

So, of course now I am convinced that someone (or something, a racoon?) jumped on top of the trash and bolted over our gate, into the backyard. In the dark they ran into the kids’ table and turned it over. But that’s all I got. No reason. Nothing.

It will remain one of those mysteries of life, I guess. But next time the dogs go nuts like that, I will at least lock the back door, because only a madman would come in with all the howling and racket they make and that would be no fun at all.
