It’s Movie Time! QUANTUM OF SOLACE – Starring Daniel Craig, Judy Dench, Olga Kurylenko, and Mathieu Amalric – 2008 – Action Drama – 4 Out Of 5 Stars

We don’t go to see very many movies at the theater when they are first released. First, the hassle of getting ready and driving the 15+ miles to the theater. Then coordinating the time to go. Finally, even matinee prices are exorbitant by any standard. So I should tell you that we didn’t pay to see this movie, but were the recipients of two free passes, which we were more than happy to use yesterday. (I didn’t say we don’t like big screens and theaters!)
Daniel Craig once again delivers a James Bond you believe really would kill anyone who proved the slightest impediment to his immediate goal, whatever that might be. He does have a weakness for women, and affords them some courtesy, but he is no ladies man in the sense of Sean Connery’s Bond, that’s for sure. He is, therefore, much more believable as a cold-hearted, calculating, and brilliant human weapon in service of Her Majesty, The Queen. And he rather loves his work, don’t you know.
Once again, the opening chase scene sets the frenetic pace for the remainder of the movie. You could say that the movie consists of chase scenes and one-on-one hand combat scenes strung together with scenes containing enough dialogue to point your mind in the direction of the story. If you don’t enjoy action movies, you certainly won’t enjoy this one, either. But we do, and we did.
I think one reason many people, including me, enjoy movies of this nature rests on the ‘fact’ that the ‘hero’ wins in the end. Always. He may be beat all to heck, but he wins. Against unbelievable (really) odds, against all reason, he prevails. He always ACTS, usually with little or no hesitation; he is never uncertain or weak. He has his own moral code, and he is very certain what that code dictates in every situation. It’s fun to see the ‘good guy’ win. Over and over and over again. If only that were the case in ‘real life’.
If you saw and liked Casino Royale, also with Daniel Craig as Bond, you should enjoy this movie as well. Since I am a notorious penny-pincher when it comes to paying to see movies, I recommend waiting and renting the movie, if you can hold off that long. I’ve found that after the initial marketing blitz subsides for new movies, I am able to wait quite easily for them to go to the bargain movie houses or to rental. Since science fiction movies are my real weakness, I am having a bit of difficulty waiting to see ‘The Day The Earth Stood Still’, even though the reviews haven’t been spectacular. We ALL have our Achilles’ Heel, but I haven’t given in yet. We’ll see….
