Many years ago my mother-in-law gifted me with a huge, shiny, stainless steel skillet, complete with matching lid. At the time I appreciated receiving it very much, because I didn’t have one so large, and with this one I could fry an entire chicken at once. You scoff, but that can be a real time-saver, and I was always looking for ways to get more done in less time. Plus, I was a working mom, and cooking after working all day wasn’t high on my list of fun things to do. I’m pretty sure Frances gave me that skillet for Christmas, and although I was thankful to receive it, I didn’t realize the love that went into that gift until many years later.

Our money was really tight back then; I would never have been able to justify spending cash to purchase ‘a skillet’. I came to understand that Frances knew that, and she also knew that practical gifts, like that skillet, can make a difference in the quality of your life by making a task so much easier to complete. I have used that skillet many, many times over the years, and I remember her and smile every time I pull it out of the cabinet.

So even though we girls like to receive frilly things, jewelry and such, please see the thought and love that lies behind the practical gifts you receive from someone who loves you. Frances is gone now. But the thought and love she put into that practical gift lives on. She actually gave me the gift of time and eased my work. And that’s no small gift.
