An annoying inconvenience as you walk the Strip in Las Vegas are the little people, both men and women, who maintain stationary spots on the sidewalks where they ‘flip’ girlie cards. They flip the cards against their fingers to get your attention, we think because they probably aren’t legally able to speak to get your attention. So, they flip the cards and thrust them in front of you, hoping you will take them and read the advertising. The sidewalks are littered with the cards, thrown down by the unsuspecting ‘newbie’ tourists who didn’t realize what they were accepting. But more are kept, I’m thinking, than are thrown away….

In all the years I’ve been coming to this town, I had never actually looked at one of these cards. So this time I accepted the cards from a guy, and just like that the next six guys hurried to give me some of their cards, too. My husband heard one of them say “Heyyyy, chica!” after I walked away with a handful of cards. Guess he thought I was a swinger, since all of the cards advertise time with ‘beautiful’ women, not one man to be found on any of the cards. This is one time I’m not sorry to disappoint!

After so many years of television programs and movies about call girls and hookers, it isn’t too shocking to see these cards advertising sexual favors that are available to anyone who has the money to pay for them. But it is shocking and sad that some women find this is an acceptable way to earn a living. Moral issues aside, the danger of disease and bodily harm that can come from these encounters is enough to make my hair stand on end.

One afternoon I happened to see part of a local tv program, a ‘reality’ show about the Las Vegas police department. No, it wasn’t like Reno 911; this was the ‘real deal’ and not funny at all. The part I saw featured a young woman who had been picked up for soliciting. She was in her mid-twenties, and nice looking. She wasn’t the least bit embarrassed or ashamed of the charges, and freely admitted that she had been arrested so many times she had lost count. She said it was just a cost of doing business, and that she would pay her fine and be back on the streets within the hour. Asked what her boyfriend thought about her line of work, she answered that he ‘actually prefers it.’ Now what in the world did that mean? I’m sure he prefers to sit in the apartment while she earns this ‘easy’ money, and apparently he has no problem with her having an arrest record, much less that she is sharing her body with other men (and possibly women).

I don’t have a moral point to make by writing this post. I just wanted to comment on something I saw while on the LV trip. Something out of the ordinary for ME, but not unusual at all for that famous ‘sin city.’
