Garden Update

The lone yellow squash plant is the winner of the ‘first to harvest’ competition in our garden. We have picked three nice-sized squash from it so far, and there are a few more that look like they will be ready soon. Because some of the blossoms/fruit had turned brown and shriveled and died, I once again went to trusty Google to find out why. WAY too much information to go into here, but let it be known that you, too, can ‘manually fertilize your squash plants’. Not as icky as it sounds, but definitely a technique involved. I won’t be trying it; too much trouble. Think if it doesn’t bear fruit, oh, well, wasn’t meant to be.

Tomatoes, now that’s a different story. I guess I would do almost anything to make home-grown, delicious tomatoes happen in our garden. Fortunately, it doesn’t appear that will be necessary. We’ve had two harvested so far, and there are tons of blossoms and a lot of green tomatoes on the plants now. The most threatening pitfall now is the summer heat, which can thwart the blossoms from setting. So we are hoping that our recent high ninety temperatures will subside to the low nineties. I’m not sure that even sheltering the plants from direct sun with screening material would help if the temps go too high.

The lilies are blooming all over the place, and there is a nice variety of colors. We’ve had fun watching them grow and bloom. I did find that there is a very sneaky weed that likes to hide with the lilies, though. Luckily for me this weed puts out a tall stem loaded with seeds that gives it away. I rushed out and pulled them all out of the various beds before those seeds could fall and take root. I just hope I got them all!

The big yard with all its landscaping is beautiful to behold during the spring and summer, but the weeding, watering, and trimming never stops! It’s easy to see how vegetation can very quickly grow over and hide anything in its path when left to grow on its own. Unless you WANT it to hide it. Then not.
