Great Blizzard '11

The weather that hit us in Oklahoma beginning Tuesday morning stretched across the country in a 2100-mile-long blanket. Temperatures plummeted overnight to record lows, and the wind that came with it was fierce and relentless.

The blizzard is not new news- it was all over the media for days prior with warning after warning – and it’s been on the news almost nonstop since it blew into our area in the wee hours Tuesday morning. With regard to the wind and frigid temperatures, it has been all the weathermen said it would be – so very, very cold. The sound of the howling wind was louder than usual, and we are used to howling wind here in central Oklahoma.

We shop a lot at Walmart, and I made my usual Monday visit, feeling quite sure I had chosen a time when there would be fewer other shoppers. Turns out I did time it pretty well, according to my checker, but it was still crazy busy, with people bumping carts and traveling willy-nilly down the aisles grabbing items and moving on as fast as they could. Tuesday evening there was one news video that showed the dairy case at Walmart completely empty, and other aisles and shelves with few items remaining. It took me longer than usual to gather up the items on my list and get checked out, and I was glad I had gone so early in the morning. I am sure it was a madhouse later in the day.

Our dogs think all of the snow and cold air was especially ordered for their playing pleasure, though. It has been difficult to get them to come back inside as they romp, dig their snouts into the snow, and roll around making doggie snow angels. They can’t understand why we don’t want to join in and why we put such a damper on their fun – just like kids!

The cold is supposed to last through the end of the week, so we will be staying in, drinking hot chocolate and apple cider, and catching up on all the programs we have recorded with the DVR. Might as well make the most of it!
